2018 is well under way; the magic of the holidays and New Year parties is well past, but one group in Halstead is still celebrating 2017. The Halstead Community Foundation(HCF), an affiliate of Central Kansas Community Foundation reached an important milestone; they now have $1 million in charitable assets under management! Director, JaLayna Carmichael said, “The million-dollar mark had been looming close in sight for quite a while. We are so excited to have finally crossed it!”
Annually a percentage of the funds under management are distributed for charitable purposes in Halstead. In 2017 the organizations that benefited from these charitable assets in a competitive application process included: USD 440, The Kansas Learning Center for Health, Halstead Public Library, Youth as Resources, Peace Connections, and Sound of the Heartland. Halstead Middle school received a discretionary grant at the end of the year for the building of the GaGa Ball Pit that is currently underway. HCF is honored to be a part of this great community impact.
2017 had been a year of change for HCF; Carmichael took over as director in June, and Tricia Weber and Cory Harrington came on as new board members. Effective in January, Harrington is now serving as chairperson of the board. Meetings with local groups and a new Facebook page have all been an effort to be more visible and help the community understand their mission. Another change was that the Grow II grant from the Kansas Health Foundation was scheduled to expire on December 31st. This was a great incentive to bring in new donations, as they would no longer be matched in 2018. One such donation stemming from that was The City of Halstead. The city council graciously approved an end of year donation so that it would qualify for the Grow II match. December 2017 also brought about the creation of a new fund, Health Ministries Clinic – Halstead. This fund was established specifically for their Halstead location. This will serve the Health Ministries Clinic Inc. in their mission to bring quality healthcare to small hometowns like ours.
The Halstead Community Foundation is excited about what 2018 will bring and look forward to opportunities to meet with groups and individuals who share a passion for Halstead. Carmichael further stated that, “by working together we can ensure what we have now will only become better for our children and future generations.”
She went on to say, “all the success of the past year is only realized because of our donors and those who support our mission. It is with sincere appreciation that we celebrate these achievements-Thank You!”
